Google Assistant Coming To Marshmallow And Nougat Devices

Google has announced that it’s bringing the Google Assistant to more Android phones starting this week. All phones running Android 6.0 Marshmallow and 7.0 Nougat will be getting an OTA update via the Google Play Services in coming weeks.

Here’s how Google describes the planned rollout:
The Google Assistant will begin rolling out this week to English users in the U.S., followed by English in Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom, as well as German speakers in Germany. We’ll continue to add more languages over the coming year.
Before now, the Google Assistant was only available on Google’s own phone, the Google Pixel, and has been rumored to be on the upcoming LG G6. But LG’s claim as the first non-Pixel phone with the assistant won't last long as other devices are sure to follow.

The Google Assistant is an improvement to the previous voice search feature on Android, the assistant is able to do more things and control your smart home devices. Google calls it a “conversational” interface, but that conversation isn’t so much more than the old way.

However, there's going to be one big improvement, you’ll be able to call-up the assistant by long-pressing the home button instead of using the microphone button on the home screen or using the command prompt “OK Google.” This action would replace the “Now on Tap” feature that used to come up when you long press the home button.

I don't know if all Android devices running Marshmallow and Nougat will get the update, Google specifies it’s coming to “eligible devices.” On the other hand it also says, “With this update, hundreds of millions of Android users will now be able to try out the Google Assistant,” so if you have an Android phone with a recent android version, there’s a big chance you’ll get the update.
