The Wait is over! Android M is Marshmallow

After being unveiled at Google I/O on 28th May 2015 a lot of people (Android and non-android users) have been waiting impatiently for the final name of the new Android version(Android M). During this time of great curiosity, the Internet was rife with tons upon tons of guesses of what the Android M would end up to be, one of the most prominent guesses was Milkshake (even I guessed that) the Wait is finally over, no more arguments because Google has released the official name and it's going to called Android 6.0 Marshmallow

Android Marshmallow

It's become somewhat of a tradition for new Android Updates to be named after Sweets,

  • CUPCAKE
  • Donut
  • ECLAIR
  • FROYO
  • Gingerbread
  • Honeycomb
  • Ice-cream Sandwich
  • Jelly bean
  • Kitkat
  • Lollipop
  • And the new addition to the list MARSHMALLOW

New Features Of Android Marshmallow

The new Android Marshmallow comes with a lot exciting features like;

ANDROID PAY

New Android Pay

If you are or were an iOS user you would know what this means because you should have used Apple pay, Android pay allows you to pay for things in shops Just like swiping of cards(you wouldn't be swiping your phone tho').

To use Android pay, you need to first register you card to your phone then simply unlock your phone and place it near the terminal at the store to make a payment.

Since Android Marshmallow has fingerprint support, you might be ask to authenticate Android Pay with your fingerprint.
Your fingerprint can also be used to unlock your device or make a purchase on Google play

App developers can also use fingerprint authentication in their applications so that users can sign in with fingerprints instead of having to type in their passwords.

POWER AND CHARGING OPTIONS

New USB connector for Android M

The Android Marshmallow would also support a new type of USB connector called USB-C, Google claims that the USB-C charges phones about five times faster than current USB cables (Wow! talk about Lightning charging).
The USB-C would also be similar to Apple's Lightning Connector, you can connect it either way! so no more struggling with your phone when you're trying to charge it in the dark.

PERMISSIONS

New Android M permission System

The new Permission system in the Android Marshmallow makes it easier for Android users to decide what information they want apps to use by giving them the opportunity to Grant of refuse access when the information is needed by the app.

If you install WhatsApp on your Android device today, you would be asked to grant permission for whatsapp to access your Location, contacts, calender, microphone, camera and many others. I'm sure most Android users do not take their time to see what informations their apps need access to, they just go ahead and click on 'Accept'.

With the new Android Marshmallow update, users won't be asked to grant any permissions on the time if download, it is only when access to a particular information is needed that they would be asked to grant permission to just that information, nothing else.. For example, if you are trying to send an image on whatsapp you would be asked to grant access to your Gallery.

You can also revoke permission to an application to access certain informations on your phone through a new option that has been included in the 'Settings'. For example, if you had allowed WhatsApp access to your camera before and you want to revoke that access, you would just go to the settings and use the new option.

OTHER IMPROVEMENTS

Android Marshmallow Developer preview

There a lot of other improvements present in the Marshmallow update most of which are just incremental to improve things that are already present in previous updates.

For example, app links have been changed to so that when you click on a Facebook link in an email or message it automatically loads the link in your Facebook app instead of asking if you want to open it using Facebook.

The app drawer has also been rearranged in a way that recently used applications show at the top and other applications are arranged alphabetically and you scroll through apps vertically now instead of horizontally.

A new feature called Android Auto Backup and restore for Apps would also be used together with Google Drive to backup apps data and settings.
