Facebook Celebrate One Billion Active Users On Messenger

More than 1 billion people now use Facebook Messenger every month, Facebook announced yesterday. Facebook now has two messaging services with over 1 billion users, as WhatsApp hit a billion back in February.

"As part of this journey to 1 billion, we focused on creating the best possible experiences in modern day communications," Facebook Messenger chief David Marcus said in a statement. "We remain focused on helping connect people to the people and businesses who matter most. Thank you to everyone who uses Messenger around the world, and we're looking forward to connecting the next billion."

Messenger has grown really fast in 2016, getting about 100 million active users every three months. The messaging app hit 800 million users in January then 900 million in April. Now, the app been downloaded over 1 billion times on Android, and about 1 billion messages are sent every month.

Users also send over 22 million GIFs a day, and 17 billion photos to friends every month through Facebook Messenger.

To celebrate hitting the 1 billion active users milestone, Facebook made this video and added a floating balloon animation whenever you send the balloon emoji to someone on the app.
